POLICE Chief Art Acevedo CHAIRS
THE URBAN YOUTH INITIATIVE

The Capitol Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is pleased to announce that Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo will serve as the inaugural Chairman for The Urban Youth Initiative. The current programs in The Urban Youth Initiative are already serving more than 1,000 young people in Central Texas – but many more kids are interested and in need. The only thing holding us back from helping these kids is the need for more volunteers and resources.  As Chairman, Chief Acevedo is calling on everyone to consider volunteering their time and their talents for this Scouting program.

1st Annual Waterloo District Pinewood Derby

Waterloo's first Pinewood Derby at Oak Springs Elementary on Saturday, November 12th, was a success with 70 or more cub scouts plus PARENTS who came together for 3 and 1/2 hours of exciting screaming kid built racing wheels. This sort of event does not happen successfully without the efforts of MANY. Want to say a huge thanks to our awesome Scout Leaders who for 4 weeks helped our scouts make their cars a reality and for all of their efforts that Saturday morning assisting as the pit crew, Brian Arriola and his team of great volunteers from APO, Ellen and Mike Tucker for jumping right in to help, Art Mata for everything he does daily and the exciting pre-race entertainment and music to keep everyone pumped up. To Tom Willi, with Pack 61, for setting up the awesome track and software and imputing all names, to Jim Mallios, our Master of Ceremonies and 2011 Pinewood Derby Chair! AND big drum roll please… to Kelli Hynes, our district’s “Grand Ambassador” coordinating all website content, emails, phone calls to assemble our team of dedicated car-cutting volunteers - Greg Wheeler, Dean Woodley, Jefre Outlaw, David Cox, Te Starr, Faith Schexnayder, John Becker, Hayden Butler, and Troop 30 – all took time to travel to multiple schools, and make many, many DERBY SMILES possible this Saturday! We would also like to sincerely thank Home Depot (Woodward store) who donated the sand paper and paint for the cars.

WATERLOO DISTRICT knows no boundaries: HELP THE URBAN YOUTH INITIATIVE

The Waterloo District, an Urban Youth Initiative of the Capitol Area Council, is currently delivering the promise of Scouting to close to 1000 youth in Austin that otherwise would not have access.

The district' s current demographics are as follows: 85% of the Scouts are Latino; 14% are African-American; 1% is Caucasian. There are 20 adult leaders who are hired and trained by the Capitol Area Council. The leaders are recruited through UT, St. Edward's, ACC and Huston-Tillotson. Most are Eagle Scouts themselves or were involved in Scouting growing up. These trained leaders are provided with the materials and support to lead weekly fun and exciting Scout meetings at the Scouts' school.

At the heart of our initiative is our desire to ensure all young people have an opportunity to join Scouting, regardless of their economic circumstance. We are currently providing in-school scouting programs to 36 schools in the Austin area – 33 elementary schools and 3 middle schools located primarily in East and South Austin. The youth we are serving face many challenges – the vast majority are considered to be economically disadvantaged, many are academically-challenged and many lack having a positive male adult role-model in their life. We are improving the lives of the youth and their families by teaching the lifetime values of the Scout Law and Oath through a fun, dynamic and engaging program.

In addition to delivering the full promise of Scouting, we provide opportunities to experience traditional events such as Cub Adventure Days, Pinewood Derby Races, Advancement Ceremonies, as well as numerous camping adventures. The Capitol Area Council is part of an exciting national initiative to increase membership of our Latino and African American youth population. We are consistently exceeding expectations through our ability to promote the tremendous positive impact of Scouting in our community, as well as through our ability to recruit and train more Latino and African American Scout leaders. Although we have had incredible success in a short period of time, we need more help from community leaders to volunteer resources for our urban youth!

COURT OF
HONOR

Boy Scout Troop 6 (Webb Middle School) and Troop 2020 (Bedichek Middle School) attended summer camp July 4th-10th at Lost Pines Scout Reservation and completed the Eagle Quest Program advancing three levels to First Class Scouts. In addition to extensive rank advancement, Scouts also had the opportunity to complete First Aid, Swimming, and Leatherworks Merit Badges plus they earned their Totin' Chip and Firem'n Chip. All boys were non-swimmers at the beginning of camp and by the end of the week all were either beginners or swimmers! While at camp, the scouts completed a service project during their free time, clearing all of the brush around the newly remodeled outdoor chapel. To celebrate the boys' well-earned achievements that week, a special Court of Honor was hosted on Sunday, August 22nd at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. During the same Court of Honor, we also recognized 10 Scouts from Pack 524 (Oak Springs Elem.) that crossed over to Boy Scouts and are now part of the new Troop at Kealing Middle School.
